Right now (over the summer) I am holding a fly fishing clinic for kids. Back Country Fly Fishing Assn. of Melbourne is providing the expertise, and Cortland provided the rods and reels for a good discount.

Take care, and keep the blog coming. I'll be sure and bookmark it.

gusGushttps://www.mrgus.net/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6880714768591527385.post-44042503066774385392023-04-01T17:41:46.550-04:002023-04-01T17:41:46.550-04:00Thank you so much for sharing this article. Until the City of Edgewater stops pumping treated waste water into the river, communities convert septic systems to sewer systems, moored sail and power boats are strictly enforced regarding brown and black water discharge, and growth around the lagoon is stopped, this trend will not cease.Barry Lhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01570301416093379056noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6880714768591527385.post-48973009795878834632022-03-27T13:35:00.708-04:002022-03-27T13:35:00.708-04:00The clam restoration project would help if more pe...The clam restoration project would help if more people knew about it.
Clams are the best filtration system God ever created.John Neilahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17438131974958240482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6880714768591527385.post-29275356650988226842022-01-16T09:53:21.649-05:002022-01-16T09:53:21.649-05:00I have been fishing the northern lagoon (New Smyrn...I have been fishing the northern lagoon (New Smyrna Beach) since the mid 80’s. The fishing has gotten poorer in the last 3 years. One fact that no one want to address is the mitigation that was done to the mosquito ditches a few years back. This quest was incredibly detrimental to the lagoon’s health. The biomass and chemicals found in the sediment were brought up into the water column. The die off of grasses was accelerated, and now we have algae clogging the water and settling on the bottom. The area once covered by grasses are now mud. The clam beds have, for the most part, gone. There needs to be a concerted effort to restore this area. Sewer systems need to be developed in all communities surrounding the lagoon. All the boats moored in the lagoon need to be addressed, I have seen black water pumped from some of these boats directly into the river. I do not want to believe the lagoon is becoming a dead body if water, but without quick action, this is the future of this area.Barry Lhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01570301416093379056noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6880714768591527385.post-5104610740460439552021-04-21T17:44:34.413-04:002021-04-21T17:44:34.413-04:00Glad to see you post again.

Just to follow up on my previous comment.
...Dave,
Just to follow up on my previous comment.

I finally contacted Tom Penn to address my concerns about the opening of Peacocks Pocket Road and the other dike roads in the refuge. He was extremely helpful and forthcoming about the problems they are having.

He told me that they closed Pocket road because of safety reasons. Although the road is passable, it is washed out in three areas close to the edge.

I asked him why it had not been repaired since Oct. or Nov. and was told it was because of manpower and funding problems. Apparently, the Fish and Wildlife people get their funding from the Dept. of Interior, and they are low on the totem for appropriations.

On Sunday, my wife and I saw literally tons of rocks and road fill, along with the equipment needed to repair the road, along Peacocks Pocket road leading to the kayak launch.

Tom told me they do not have the equipment operators they need to do the work or the money to contract the job out.

I suggested that some of my readers could do the work pro bono or for a minimal fee of $1.00, but Tom said the "powers that be" would probably not go along with the idea.

Personally, I would do the work for free just so we could fish the area again.

I also asked why Shiloh Road, Long pond road, Pumphouse road, and the others that have been gradually closed have not yet been reopened.

He told me that it was funding problems, and that the dike roads were never intended to be for vehicle traffic.

I find that hard to believe since I have been living here for over 25 years, and have fished all those roads by truck at one time or another.

In any event, Tom said that they would probably have Peacocks Pocket road re-opened in two to three months.

At the pace they do things around here, I may be dead before they re-open the areas. We can only hope.

Tight LinesJohn Neilahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17438131974958240482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6880714768591527385.post-46198721649629392082017-02-24T19:47:30.392-05:002017-02-24T19:47:30.392-05:00Thanks Dave,

He runs a so-called "fishing school" down in Cocoa. I recently paid $50 for the Marc Krsek Space Coast Fishing Class. We fished the Indian River in a broken-down canoe for a little over two hours. The result was a blowfish and a couple catfish.

During the trip, Marc was running down the local fisherman left and right and he mentioned your blog and the comments he had made. I never heard of a gator messing with kayaks but during breeding season but anything is possible.

There are a few gators in the marsh area that hit the 10 foot mark that can cause some serious harm to humans and I often see them in the river where wade fishing is a common practice.

My gripe with them is when they follow my Chug Bug or Skitterwalk baits.
